DPP Watch

One exciting aspect of taking part in an Ultimate Footy or AFL Fantasy league is players gaining dual-position eligibility in season. This feature (unavailable in SuperCoach formats) adds a nice organic progression for players while rewarding coaches shrewd enough to look deeper into team set ups and player positioning across the season.

Best of all, it means value for us on the waiver wire and at the trade table. But you have to get the right players. We’ve taken the magnifying glass out to see future DPPs and one to keep an eye on. For UF coaches, this week looms large, while AFL Fantasy coaches have to look up locking up players now for a potential reward in round 6.

 Lachie Whitfield

Currently: Midfielder
Possible Secondary: Defender

Average: 100.7

Lachie is one of the higher profile players and rightly has had his move to half back discussed in the media. This may mean that there is little value to be had as you’ll find him snatched up in all leagues. Have a go at a trade and hope the Whitfield owner values him as a mid-only, but given the publicity, it’ll be a hard sell.

 Jordan Lewis

Currently: Midfielder
Possible Secondary: Defender

Average: 73

Another mid turned defender, Jordan Lewis’ decision making, and kicking are being used by the Demons more out of defence as he ages. Round 3 has shown he still has plenty to offer and may be found on some waiver wires. Some coaches are pretty quick to question why you’re after a certain player. So, given Lewis hasn’t set the world on fire, you could set up a trade and ask for Lewis to be thrown in as a secondary player.

Connor Blakely

Currently: Midfielder
Possible Secondary: Defender

Average: 89.3

UF are ahead of the curve here, having already given Blakely defender status. Fantasy coaches can basically lock him in for the same come the R6 changes. Blakely finished last year playing the mop up role for Freo in the half back, and he was prolific. Despite a quiet round 1 with 17 disposals and 4 marks, he racked up 30 and 12, then 21 and 9 in the rounds that followed. Use the quiet round 1 to leverage a trade while his average remains low.

Marcus Bontempelli

Currently: Midfielder
Possible Secondary: Forward

Average: 74.3

Luke Beveridge isn’t afraid of using just about anyone as a forward. As mentioned on the podcast, Bontempelli was left to sit deep forward on Sunday and have shots at goal, kicking 3.3. Given the win, Bont may find himself there more often. While he hasn’t been as prolific a scorer this year, his average should rise. If the Bontempelli owner is losing faith you can sweep in to pick up a game changer for a value price. If he can gain forward status, all the better.

Adam Treloar

Currently: Midfielder
Possible Secondary: Forward

Average: 93

A more speculative pick given Treloar’s positioning at times on Friday. He rotated through the forward line, spending roughly half his time as a forward. Tune in to the Pies over the coming weeks. If Treloar spends more time up forward his output may drop, but he could become a viable trade target. Bucks has rotated Sidebottom and even Adams forward a bit, which could split the workload enough for them all to retain mid only status. Throw in the returns of Elliot and De Goey and we have a great big question mark. Watch with interest.

Scott Lycett

Currently: Ruck
Possible Secondary: Forward

Average: 78

Nic Nat has garnered all the attention for his impact in only 50% of game time. The other half is forgotten which suits us just fine, as that means we can grab Lycett before everyone else is done watching Natanui spin around Gaz for the 30th time. Instead of going off, Lycett goes forward. While he’s still required to be in the ruck half the time, the forward eligibility may not come straight away, but those splits will shift as Nic Nat shoulders more of the workload. Add and hope for a quick update but know that it will come with time.
