Round 11 Injuries

If you have been reading this article week-in week-out, then you will know by now it is a healthy mixture of 50% injury and 50% banter. What you don’t know, and that I am happy to reveal today; it’s also 50% coffee. That’s right, a total of 150%. Maths, logic, geography, history et al are not my strong suit. Anyway, let’s get in to some injuries!

Mid-week Madness!

Looking at the Chinese calendar, it’s the year of the Dog. I reckon it is closer to the year of the foot, as every third injury seems to be foot related. As a fantasy coach, any type of foot injury always spells alarm. Foot and shoulder. Both are overly complex and take a long time to heal. Compounding the injury itself, generally aerobic fitness slips. Anyway – Bailey Dale reported foot soreness early this week and will see a stint on the sidelines.

Prognosis – 4-6 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Cordy, Adams and Naughton all about ready to come back. Add those previously demoted to the VFL (Wallis, Biggy/Tupac etc) and a hard loss to the Demons as a result of another 2nd half fade and you’re likely to see a bunch of changes at the Dogs. They have the bye next week so expect a fresh and different side in two weeks.

Matt Rosa was ruled out with a hammy whomp this week. No one has cared about Matt Rosa since 2014 though.

Prognosis – 2014 called, they want their… dubstep… back (brb need more coffee) – 2-4 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Jarryd Lyons and Michael Barlow. I would make these two priority trade targets this week. You might be able to whisper sweet nothings and get a bargain.

Jeremy Howe came up a little sore after last week, missing this game with bone bruising. Listed as TBC on the injury list, and for good reason. It is pot luck guessing when bone bruising will be right to go again. We have already seen small stints on the sideline turn in to multiple weeks throughout the year with various players as a result.

Prognosis – 3 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Maynard go go go.

Another week, another Stephen Hill quad injury. I should really just write one paragraph on this guy and copy paste it to every report going forward. Shill reported soreness in his “good” quad, which isn’t good for owners. Many people picked him up in preparation for his DPP status, which he achieved, but he has been injured ever since.

Prognosis – 3 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – I’m hungry every time I see his name, but I am really excited to see what Stephan Giro can produce over the next couple of weeks. Keep an eye out. (brb off for a Giro)

Don Pyke and the shifty buggers at Adelaide continue to make my job a hell of a lot harder than it needs to be by not reporting their injuries accurately. Anyway, Brad Crouch will end up having surgery. Adelaide still haven’t put a line through his season, so I am going to do it for them.

Prognosis – Season

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Swans vs Carlton

I know that everyone wants their team to be showcased in the weeks opening game, but I hate going in to a round knowing that Friday is a write-off. Carlton were never going to win here. This was made more obvious when Patrick Cripps suffered what looked to be a corkie. He returned to the field heavily strapped and played out the game. Carlton have the bye next week so he should be fine.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Special mention here to BT. Every time he mentions Jake Lloyd I think he is having a stroke.

Prognosis – F.A.S.T

Potential Waiver Pickup – Fizz/Jono for Commentator!

Dogs vs Demons

The first official whomp of the week here, with Tory Dickson going down in the first quarter. Hasn’t ever set the fantasy world alight, but he has been exciting to watch this year when he plays. Anyway, another stint on the sidelines coming up.

Prognosis – 3-4

Potential Waiver Pickup – As mentioned, dogs have the bye this week, but look for them to make a whole swag of changes – which will force a reshuffle. I would wait for teams to be announced in two weeks’ time.

Jake Lever’s renaissance as one of the competitions premium intercept defenders was…well… intercepted, with the defender likely to miss the rest of the season with an ACL.

Prognosis – Season

Potential Waiver Pickup – Plenty of players that could come in as either a like-for-like or a reshuffle. Weideman, Wagner, Frost, Tyson. Dom is paying the price at the moment for leading the preseason revolt against the coaching staff. Hope he moves on at the end of the year, as he is a first team player at most clubs.

Jake Melksham also went down awkwardly in this game but returned to play out the rest of the game.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Tim Smith, who has put together two very impressive games for an average of 95+, had a neck complaint. He played out the rest of the game, and I think he should be a o k.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Adding the Demons coach Simon Goodwin to the list for the first time. He is doing a lot right at the moment in Hell (it is called that right?) but these Fugazi shenanigans? Get outta ‘ere

Prognosis – SEASON

Potential Waiver Pickup – No Fugazi here

Hawks vs Power

No injuries say whaaaaaaaaaaat?!

Cats vs Suns

The Suns finally got to play at their home ground! Amazing. And you better believe it coincided with a win… oh wait… nope. You better believe it coincided with a return to form… nope… hmmm. You better believe it coincided with a number of injuries and a massive loss. That’s the one.

Aaron Hall has missed out on his DPP listing, after missing the majority of this game. Bit of a double whammy for coaches there. Hall has had shoulder complaints before and if my memory serves me correctly, required surgery last year. Hopefully he can avoid surgery this time around.

Prognosis – 2-3 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – As mentioned, Barlow and Lyons to come in from the NEAFL, Jesse Lonergan the only other option. The cupboard is bare. High risk no reward here.

Aaron Young completed the Aaron bingo at the Suns, going off with what is thought to be an ankle sprain.

Prognosis – 1-2 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Seriously no idea what to write here. Have a look yourself and let me know if I have missed an absolute gem opportunity. I haven’t, but feel free to go look.

Mountain Dew said that Steven May suffered a high ankle injury, which is generally worse than a simple sprain. It didn’t look great on the footage and pending scans he could be gone for a while.

Prognosis – 3-6 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Brayden Crossley or Two-Meter-Peter will probably slot in, as the only other competent tall players they have that are fit.

Dons vs Tigers

Did the Dons rehire Mark Neeld? After two impressive performances against the Cats and the Giants since his departure, the bombers put in an absolute stinker at Dreamtime against the Tigers. What a poor effort. Some of this could be attributed to the early loss of David Zaharakis who has been in career best fantasy form. The club is playing down a possible broken collarbone, but from the look of it, that is the BEST possible outcome.

Prognosis – 4-6 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – I’m going to get absolutely wrecked for this on Twitter, but… Jake Stringer. He should be on your waiver, he slotted into the mid for most of the game in Zaha’s absence and finished with a handy 29 possessions. Have at me Twitter trolls, have, at, me. It’s at this point, future-cam arrives and tells me this is a terrible idea. Anytime now future Cam.

Quick one on Orazio, who was helped from the ground early in the game. The vision didn’t look great, even though he managed to play out the game. Keep an eye on it.

Eagles vs Saints

Jack Darling suffered an ankle injury, which will frustrate owners as he has been huge and consistent, two things my wife wouldn’t describe me as.

Prognosis – 4-6 weeks (pending scans)

Potential Waiver Pickup – It could be about time to target a JJK owner… He may even be floating around some waivers. He has the bye next week, but if you can hold him… get him.

The Saints had a bunch of almost injuries that ended up not being issues, however the least known AFL captain Jarryn Geary suffered a calf injury.

Prognosis – Wait, he’s captain? – 2-3 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Ed Phillips stocks rising.

Roos vs Lions

Jarrad Waite was an early withdrawal from this game, struggling to find his walking frame to get down to the ground in time.

Prognosis – 2 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Should only miss one game, as he has the bye in round 13. No waiver here

Jed ANDERSONNNNNNN who has about the most announcer friendly name in the league, also went down early in the game and gave owners (myself included) a robust 4. It was a light hammy whomp, and I will be holding – with him only likely to miss one game.

Prognosis – 2 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Should only miss one game, as he has the bye in round 13. Hrovat will probably come in, but then also go out

Jarrod Berry was a late withdrawal before the game, failing to get over some hammy tightness. He should be right to go next week.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Bundy got absolutely smashed by Jy Simpkin with a glancing blow that sent him tumbling ala Tekken, the only thing missing a “K.O” voice over.

Prognosis – 2 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Should only miss one game, as he has the bye in round 13. Berry to come back in

One of the best barometers of the Brisbane team, Charlie Cameron went down in the first half and didn’t play out the rest of the game. There are varying reports, some citing a foot injury and others citing an ankle. On the replay he legitimately looks like jello and it is kind of hard to tell. If I was a betting man, and I am, I would say year of the foot continues.

Prognosis – $1.50 that it’s a foot – 4-5 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Take your pick of a boring lot – Basti, Frost, Bell *shudder*

Hugh McCluggage copped a bit of a calf strain, and I expect he will sit out next week and come back after the byes.

Prognosis – 2 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – As above

Dockers vs Pies

Before we even get in to this game, Fantasy coaches around Australia have been waiting for the opportune time to pull the trigger on the Harley. I went deep this week and loaded up a week early to guarantee a potential gun in my forward line. Turns out the right answer was to never pull the trigger. Ever. Bennell went off in the first quarter in the WAFFLES with calf tightness. If like me you pulled the trigger, throw him back.

Prognosis – 4-6 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here, just disappointment

Only one main injury coming out of this one, to Alex Pearce, who had his ankle caught underneath him in a tackle. It didn’t look too great, but Ross Lyon… who we have established has no idea what he is doing… seems to think it is minor.

Prognosis – 3-4 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Johnson to come back from bingo and roast night at the RSL to play

There were a bunch of minor injuries/corkies which shouldn’t prevent people from playing next week, including Sidey, Paper-thin Walters, Connor Blakely, and Lachie Neale

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Giants vs Crows

Good personality Tom Lynch suffered a side strain in a tackle with Callan Ward. I watched it about 1000 times on replay and it looks really innocuous.

Prognosis – 2-3 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Who do they even have left? Tex is out, Mcgovern is out, now Lynch. Expecting a reshuffle and Hampton to slot in.

The guy that gets the GWS machine moving, Cogs, suffered delayed concussion symptoms after a head knock in the third. Initial reports are positive, but I expect the club to give him an extended rest, with the bye in round 13.

Prognosis – 2 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Matt de Boer is about ready to return and shouldn’t need to play any NEAFL.
