Round 12 Injuries

Ah so we have arrived at the main byes. Not that pesky fake bye round, but the real deal. Fantasy coaches around the nation were feeling the pinch, with guns like Patty Cripps, Gaffer Tape, The Snout, and Macbae all taking a week off to visit their favourite fish ‘n’ chipper. Like good diligent coaches we were, however, prepared. Plans in place to mitigate the chaos.

And then… Thursday night happened. Use this article as therapy, as we walk through the pain together.

Mid-week Madness!

DUSTY! Out of nowhere he flees the country. There’s no official report that states he will be back again. Or if he can get through customs. Apparently, a calf issue, and you have to wonder if this has been lingering for a while.

Prognosis – Border Patrol – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

One of those players that no one likes to own, but has absolutely been on fire, Mitch Robinson broke a toe last weekend and it wasn’t diagnosed until midweek. I love that after multiple seasons at the lions, when you google him the first image is a Carlton photo.

Prognosis – This little piggy went to… – 2-3 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Should only miss one match with the bye in round 13, but maybe have a look at Rhys Mathieson. Probably about time he came back and should go close to 75/80 each game whenever he plays.

A really high Average Draft Pick this year, it was revealed this week that Rory Laird fractured his hand. The Crows being the Crows, still held out hope that he would play this week, however he was finally rubbed out.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – I expect Laird to play next week. The fracture didn’t displace the bone, so it will hopefully heal quickly.

There has been a lot of talk about whether or not Stuart Dew had eaten fantasy stalwart Michael Barlow over the last few weeks. I think we can now say with all certainty… that the hunter, became the hunted. Unconfirmed reports state that Barlow fractured his jaw trying to eat Dew.

Prognosis – 3-4 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Jarryd Lyons played another game in the NEAFL, and after the Suns showing against GWS, I expect he will get the call up.

Power vs Tigers

David Astbury was the only concern from either team. He came off with an ankle injury but managed to play out the game. He is going to be assessed through the week, however with the bye looming in Round 14, they might opt to give him two weeks off to get it right.

Prognosis – 1-2 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Jayden Short has been politely going about his business; 2 tons in the last 3 weeks. His last 5-week AF average of 82.5. Not bad.

Cats vs Roos

Every time I watch this fixture, I look forward to the Scott splice; when both Scott’s are on TV at once looking concerned. People talk about Indigenous round, they talk about the Grand Final, Anzac Day… all of these pale in comparison to the Scott splice.

After bragging through the week that the Cats were going to go in unchanged, you better believe that they had a late change. The town car Lincoln McCarthy had a tight hammy and wasn’t risked. He had only just come back into the team

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – I think he will be right next week, though the Cats basically have a fresh team waiting in the twos to call up, so he may struggle to get a spot.

Remember the toy Stretch Armstrong? He was a really flexible muscle-bound goon that could stretch. Simple yeah? Well Aaron Black was clearly a fan, doing his best Armstrong impression when landing from a marking contest. Massive hyperextension. Talk of a potential ACL.

Prognosis – IT’S NOT SUPPOSED TO BEND LIKE THAT! – 6 weeks to Season

Potential Waiver Pickup – Jayden Short has been politely going about his business; 2 tons in the last 3 weeks. Last 5-week AF average of 82.5. Not bad.

Menagoolies went off in the last quarter and straight down to the rooms with a back complaint. He has had this type of issue before, so owners beware. Keep an eye on it.

Prognosis – 1 week

Potential Waiver Pickup – The Cats face the Tigers next week, and I reckon they may give the Goolie a week off to get his back right after the bye. Scooter to return, and could be floating around on your waivers, though he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire this year.

A couple of niggles from the Roos in Kayne Turner and Billy Hartung though I expect both to be right next week. Side note: The commentators kept of referring to Billy Hartung as a running machine… is he? I get ANB, I get Tom Phillips… but Hartung? If anyone has stats on distance travelled, feel free to comment below.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Giants vs Suns

If the Suns can’t at least give me a good performance, can they work on building the capability to give me my time back? Seriously this was just awful to watch. The only reason to keep watching was to see if GWS were able to finish with a full squad or not, as they were smashed by the injury stick.

Dylan Shiel rolled his ankle when landing, but it didn’t look that bad. Being Dylan Shiel though he played it up and was assisted from the ground. He tested it for a while on the sidelines and later came back to absolutely monster the rest of the game.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Rory Lobb copped a blow to his ribs and got a free night’s accommodation at the hospital.

Prognosis – mmm ribs – 2-4 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Dawson Simpson will get the call up.

Lachie Whitfield sent scares through 100% of leagues when he copped a knock to the knee. It looked like it could have been one of those knocks that turns into a PCL, but like Shiel he returned to post his biggest score since round 2.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

There was about a 2-minute passage of play where Giants just kept on going down with injury, and Daniel Lloyd looks to have suffered a medial ligament damage in that same passage.

Prognosis – 4 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Cogs to slip back in. The one week I don’t name Bonar and I bet he comes in…

Saints vs Swans

If the Suns can’t figure out time travel to give me my time back, maybe they can partner with the Saints. Jack Billings had about 1000 touches in the VFL, but he isn’t the change the Saints need. New coaching staff. Not just Richo. Do it.

Whilst all eyes were on Dane Rampe miraculously not falling on his head, no one seemed to notice Nathan Brown getting concussed. To be fair, no one notices Nathan Brown normally anyway.

Prognosis – 1 week

Potential Waiver Pickup – Jake Carlisle to come back from his suspension. Do. Not. Touch.

Bombers vs Lions

The world’s best suction, Dyson Heppell got absolutely flattened by Luke Hodge in what looked to be just two warriors going for the ball. Massive hit. Dyson left the field and played no further part in the game, a bit like the cordless vacuum.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – Bombers have the bye next week, no waiver here.

Anyone after some meat for their sandwich? Devon Ham will be available in two weeks’ time, so you will have to go with pastrami for now.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – 2 weeks to recover due to the bye, I think Devon will be right to go.

Crows vs Dockers

Not relevant in. well. Any form of fantasy footy, but certainly having a cracker year, Alex Pearce had a massive collision late in the game and broke his thumb. Alex was assisted from the field, in what is likely the only time someone has been assisted from the ground with a thumb injury

Prognosis – 5-6 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Not a like-for-like but keep an eye on Ethan Hughes. Once compared to Nat Fyfe…once… by Ross, who seriously has no idea what he is doing. Johnson likely to come back in though.

Luke Brown suffered an ankle injury late in the game and looks set for a bit of a visit to the fish ‘n’ chipper.

Prognosis – 3 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Kyle Cheney will come in as the replacement, however keep an eye on Curtly Hampton and Patrick Wilson. Both should come in to serious consideration after the Crows have put in a string of forgettable games.

Demons vs Pies

Daniel Wells came off early with what looked to be a calf complaint and went down for injections. He later returned to play, however looked hampered.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – With the bye next week, Wells will be right after the rest.

Oscar McDonald was collected early in the fourth term and didn’t return to the field, ruled out with concussion. You could be forgiven for thinking the rest of his team left the field at the same time. Rubbish.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – Should be right to go after the byes.

Big Freeze

Now in its fourth year, we have seen many people go down the slide and ALMOST hit their head on the slide due to leaning too far backwards. Surprisingly, this was not the cause of the first injury in slide history, with Fagan apparently tearing his hammy off the bone.

Prognosis – Oliver Twist – Season

Potential Waiver Pickup – He won’t play again this year. But I’m sure he will be fine to coach.
