Round 13 Injuries

The second Bye round has come and gone, and like many other coaches out there, I said bye to this week before it started; having no chance of winning. A bit like Carlton (nya nya nya). In every league I’m in, we have bye rounds turned on, and I am totally all for it even though it means some losses. The main reason I think… is separation anxiety. I have a hard-enough time without AFL fantasy in the off season; looking longingly out the window on a Thursday evening dreaming of team announcements that will never come. Opening up dream-stats and realising there are no golds to be found anywhere except my fridge. So, my message is: we only get AFL fantasy for 6 months of the year… why make it 5 months 1 week? #TurnByesOn

Mid-week Madness!

The fourth, and arguably most successful Jonas Brother, Tom Jonas whomped his hammy in the first quarter last week but managed to play out the game. Seems the power decided to give him the week off. Unconfirmed reports have him appearing on the Voice.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here, should play next week.

Jarrad McVeigh was ruled out of this week after experiencing calf tightness. The Swans have the bye next week and are confident he will return after that, but just remember… he is old and has a history of soft tissue injury… and Allirx2 was great in his place.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here, should play after the bye

David Cunningham suffered a toe injury last week and was ruled out this week. Not that it had any effect on the score.

Prognosis – 2 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Caleb Marchbank could be a bit of a smokie. Showed a bit in the JLT, wasn’t terrible in round 1, but has been in and out of the side with injuries ever since. MKen will come back too but hasn’t shown any reason to pick him up.

Power vs Dogs

This is a bit of karma to all the coaches who said MacBae was going to have a breakout season this year. He has always been good. No one, absolutely no one… can say that they predicted he would be as good as Tom Mitchell this year. And now, because so many people claimed they knew (direct correlation, obviously), he got injured. Well done guys. You ruined it for the humble coaches who are just happy to be along for the ride. Bae suffered a hammy whomp in the second quarter and didn’t return to the play the rest of the game.

Prognosis – 3-4 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Josh Dunkley and Lin Jong are the two likely to get the call up. Look for a cheap trade for Dunkley as he probably isn’t on the waivers.

Easton Wood will miss the remainder of the fantasy season with a high hammy whomp, also sustained in the second quarter. Doesn’t play an overly fantasy friendly role and will be replaced by someone who will do the same. Boo.

Prognosis – Fantasy Season

Potential Waiver Pickup – Aaron Naughton and Marcus Adams will be looked at over the next couple of weeks. Both returning from injury – Adams got through managed minutes in the VFL which is a good sign for the unit.

Lukas Webb, who from a fantasy perspective is a consistent disappointment, broke his thumb. A kid sent him a nice thumb’s up picture over twitter, which Lukas saw as a mocking gesture and slammed shut the door to his room and blasted Panic! At the Disco.

Prognosis – 2-3 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Likely those that have already been mentioned above.

Who knew that the Bont’s biggest inspiration was Aaron Black? Bont landed awkwardly and hyperextended his knee, eliciting more gasps than when he didn’t get DPP. He later returned to play out the game, with the physio’s confident no structural damage had occurred. He will be monitored over the coming week.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

The Toothpaste went down in the first passage of play when he got absolutely cleaned up. Wait… I mean… McCleaned up. Nailed it. It was his shoulder again. Longtime readers will note that McLean injured his shoulder earlier in the year but didn’t miss a game. He looked uncomfortable in that original game and looked worse for wear after this knock. One to keep an eye on; I think this is a lingering problem.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

I’m pretty close to 100% sure, that no commentary team has ever failed to mention that Tom Boyd was a grand final hero. It gets said at least once per match, usually followed up later with something like “he just hasn’t been able to produce the same kind of form…” Anyway, he suffered a compound fracture to his finger, and is likely to miss a few games.

Prognosis – 2-4 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – The Dogs forward stock is completely bare at the moment with Big Red still out for a few weeks. I expect a structural change, with the Bont to spend even more time forward. Roughead a cheeky chance to come back in to the team.

I thought Shane Biggs got injured but turns out he was just terrible.

Hamstring Awareness is back in vogue this week, with DBJ finishing the game, but noticeably restricted. DBJ has been amazing for owners since Hartlett went down, being that sole running defender. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s this awareness that was completely to blame for the lower score, with Pittard playing a similar role and splitting the points. After the massacre from Thursday I don’t expect this will change.

Prognosis – Aware – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Swans vs Eagles

I love a good clean bill of health, especially after the Thursday game which basically saw the entire Dogs roster go down and subsequently give me RSI from typing. Thanks Sydney, I don’t like your city, your housing prices, or the fact that you get extra salary cap, but thanks nonetheless.

In his return game Liam Ryan joined JJK in a limp off. It was a close contest, however the crowd decided that they were both soft, and should play out the game. They did.

Prognosis – Aware – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Carlton vs Freo

When will I learn: don’t watch Carlton! I was keen to watch Fyfe v Cripps, but this was just awful. Another blowout. The players keep saying that Bolton is the guy for the job and I believe them. When will SOS start to take responsibility for his list? He recruits the offcuts from his former club, all of which have been a flop. Happy to be proven wrong here – and give me your thoughts on twitter for how Carlton can improve.

Anyway, both clubs seem to have come away unscathed. But my Saturday arvo did not.

Saints vs Suns

Jack Bowes was the only injury concern for the Suns, suffering a quad complaint in the third quarter. Dew said he will be assessed during the week, however I am going to go out on a limb here… and say….

Prognosis – 2-4 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Will Brodie will likely come back in to the side. If they give him the role he is built for, he could be ok. But they won’t. #JustSunsThings.

One of the best waiver pick-ups for the year, and a potential top 5 defender, Jimmy Webster suffered an adductor strain. The coaching staff think he will miss one game after the bye, and I have no reason to doubt them. This isn’t Adelaide we’re talking about.

Prognosis – 2 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Sam Gilbert will likely return to the main side after the bye, with Webster slotting in shortly after. Blacres is in a similar situation to Webby, and I would be looking for a cheap trade before he comes back in.

The guy who has the name of what would be a terrible tasting cocktail, Bailey Rice got KTFO when his head collided with Jack Martin. He is a gun youngster, and I expect him to be right after the bye.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

Hawks vs Crows

Anyone else suffer migraines? I get them, and totally empathise with James Frawley who was a late out due to a migraine. It is his second this year that has impacted game time.

Prognosis – Sleep it off – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – No waiver here

MORE AWARENESS! That’s right, twice the hammy awareness this round, with the club that started the movement reporting that the inferior Gib, Gibson was hampered by it after the second quarter. He played out the game, however clearly had a bit of an existential crisis due to becoming aware, with thoughts like “Is it my hamstring? Or am I the Hamstrings human?” and “what if it isn’t a hamstring, but is actually, a hamwire”. Very profound Gibbo.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – With the bye next week, he should be right.

The Seed struggled with a hip pointer issue, which is basically a hard knock to the hip. Would be a bit sore over the coming days but shouldn’t miss any footy with the bye incoming.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – With the bye next week, he should be right.

Cats vs Tigers

Tom Stewart came off in the first quarter with an ankle injury and was assessed in the rooms. This is an interesting one, I think it is a continuation from an injury a few weeks ago. He managed to play out the game and didn’t look in too much discomfort. Keep an eye on it.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – With the bye next week, he should be right.

After only just returning from hammy tightness, McCarthy went down again in the third quarter and didn’t return. This guy just can’t get a break.

Prognosis – 3-4 weeks

Potential Waiver Pickup – Cats will bring back Harry Taylor, Scooter and Hendo. My pick would be Scooter.

Optus Sport

Special recognition goes to the complete incompetence of Optus Sport. I know it is off #brand, but I just can’t leave it off. They buy the rights to show arguably the biggest sporting event in the world (well, except the Scott Splice), and then don’t show it. What twisted sickos are running this place?!

Prognosis – Penalty

Potential Waiver Pickup – FREE TO AIR!

The Pod

A big welcome back to The Statesman, returning from his #brand suspension overnight in a stellar performance. Unfortunately, I was a #geelonglateout for the same pod and missed my spot doing the injuries. It is the second time Cameron McLachlan has appeared on this list, and surely will not be the last.

Prognosis – No issue

Potential Waiver Pickup – Nope.
