We explored in last week’s podcast how data can be helpful when predicting the next James Worpel of 2019, Tim Taranto of 2018 (and 2019!) or Clayton Oliver of 2017. However, data is just one facet of the equation.
We often combine the numbers coupled with a player’s age and years in the league to try and come to a conclusion as to where the player’s scoring trajectory is headed. However, arguably the most important element — OPPORTUNITY — can often be a guessing game. Who knows what the coaches are thinking? What gameplans we’ll see deployed in 2020? Or, how all those glorious pre-season time-trial PBs really translate to on-field performance? In this article, I’ll attempt to carve out a basic — albeit not perfect — guide to assessing the opportunities for scoring available at each club in 2020.
Utilising the AFL’s official list of retirements, delistings and trades, I’ve broken down the incoming and outgoing total seasonal fantasy points for all 18 clubs. These numbers are the total AFL Fantasy points scored in 2019 in the regular home & away season — no former career totals were taken into account. I’ve then subtracted the outgoing players scoring from the incoming to produce the “Net Opportunity” available heading into 2020 for existing existing players, draftees and new recruits — should they improve on their 2019 output. The data does not include the upcoming NAB 2019 AFL draft and the preseason draft (the latter of which can easily be added once it’s complete!).
A POSITIVE number in Net Opportunity means fantasy points have LEFT the club and therefore scoring opportunity is theoretically up for grabs. A NEGATIVE number means that the players ARRIVING at the club outweigh the scoring of those leaving and are adding to the internal competition already at the club. There are a heap of variables to consider, such as whether a team improves or alters their gameplan — potentially increasing the overall output to allow more points to be scored despite more competition. These numbers also don’t account for where the points gained or lost are most prevalent as relating to their positional value. Nevertheless, the numbers provide some context to the potential opportunities for fantasy scoring available at each club heading into 2020.

Dos love the numbers analysis.
Would estimate this becomes even more relevant if it’s split by position per team (just give you more work to do), it should highlight who exactly can benefit
