2020 DT Scoring Changes by Position
While waiting for enough rounds of footy to take place so I can put together some consistency ratings, thought it would be worth having a quick look at how the scoring at each position has changed for the 2020 season. With a multitude of changes taking place, shorter quarters, delayed season etc., you would think there could be significant change.
These numbers were put together comparing the average score by the ranks at each position, rather than the players.
For example, in 2019, the #1 Ruck in any given round was putting up 125+ points on average. In 2020, the top 2 rucks in the first three (full) rounds are averaging 125+ points.
For the record, I have used the 1.25 multiplier on the 2020 averages for this comparison.
Defenders
2019 Rank | Points | 2020 Rank
Elite | 1 – 3 | Over 120 | 1 – 2 |
Star | 4 – 6 | 110 – 119 | 3 – 5 |
Great | 7 – 12 | 100 – 109 | 6 – 11 |
Good | 13 – 22 | 90 – 99 | 12 – 20 |
Avg | 23 – 60 | 70 – 89 | 21 – 52 |
Below Avg | 61 – 100 | 50 – 69 | 53 – 92 |
Bust | Over 100 | Under 50 | Over 93 |
Defender scoring has taken a hit thus far this season, with all of the brackets having less players compared to their 2019 scores. So if you look at your team and think “I don’t have a top rank defender”… many of your league mates are likely in a similar position. And injuries to higher end scorers like Howe and Stewart (sit down, Newman, not you) is not going to help things.
Forwards
2019 Rank | Points | 2020 Rank
Elite | 1 – 3 | Over 120 | 1 – 4 |
Star | 4 – 8 | 110 – 119 | 5 – 10 |
Great | 9 – 16 | 100 – 109 | 11 – 17 |
Good | 17 – 30 | 89 – 99 | 18 – 27 |
Avg | 31 – 70 | 70 – 88 | 28 – 57 |
Below Avg | 71 – 125 | 50 – 69 | 58 – 104 |
Bust | 126 + | Under 50 | 105 + |
The 2020 forwards on the other hand, have some greater depth at the higher brackets, before falling off at the lower end. In hindsight, there were an abundance of forwards that were earmarked for midfield roles. Players like Petracca, Simpkin, Bailey Smith, Langford and Tucker have really taken a rise to start the season. Hopefully you managed to snag one or two of those in your draft.
Rucks
2019 Rank | Points | 2020 Rank
Elite | 1 | Over 125 | 1 – 2 |
Star | 2 – 3 | 110 – 125 | 3 – 4 |
Great | 4 – 5 | 100 – 109 | 5 – 7 |
Good | 6 – 8 | 90 – 99 | 8 |
Avg | 9 – 12 | 80 – 89 | 9 – 12 |
Below Avg | 13 – 15 | 70 – 79 | 13 – 14 |
Bust | Over 16 | Under 70 | Over 15 |
Ruckman have seen an increase in depth throughout the higher brackets. This is easy to chalk up to the reduced game time, with many of the teams opting to play one primary ruck in games. Marshall owners are hoping that Brent Ratten will stick with the one-ruck strategy, no doubt.
Midfielders
2019 Rank | Points | 2020 Rank
Elite | 1 – 6 | Over 130 | 1 – 7 |
Star | 7 – 12 | 120 – 129 | 8 – 15 |
Great | 13 – 22 | 110 – 119 | 16 – 29 |
Good | 23 – 38 | 100 – 109 | 30 – 40 |
Avg | 39 – 56 | 90 – 99 | 41 – 57 |
Below Avg | 57 – 100 | 70 – 89 | 58 – 96 |
Bust | 101 – 130 | 50 – 69 | 97 – 126 |
Big Bust | 130 + | Under 50 | 127 + |
Like the Ruck position, there seems to be a higher % of game played for the higher end midfielders, resulting in greater depth at the higher brackets for the 2020 season.
I’ll be keeping an eye on scoring output throughout the season, and a first look at player consistency will be a few weeks away. Let me know if you have any questions/feedback on Twitter @Berad87.
