The first bye week is done and now would be a good time to see what moves your league-mates made before lockout or during the round (if you play rolling lockouts) in an attempt to field a competitive team. I’ve already seen a number of valuable players dropped across my leagues and the byes is no time to be shy with your waiver activity… let’s get wired!

Here are the players to prioritise this week:

Sam Powell-Pepper (DNP) – FWD/MID

He’ll be coming off his bye and faces Richmond next week, who are a decent matchup in terms of fantasy. As a 74 (AF) averaging forward, SPP is the kind of player to scoop up if dropped by a desperate league-mate.

Trent Cotchin (DNP) – MID

I may as well just copy and paste what I wrote about SPP here. Cotch is done with his bye and in deeper leagues, is on the fringes of ‘must-own’ status. He’s a fine add to help you through the remaining bye rounds.

Will Powell (101 AF/119 SC) – DEF

Hmmmmmm, I tentatively include Powell as a suggested add this week because he has his bye upcoming. However, he was playing on a wing this week and with Weller going down, a roll-shift and some increased opportunity could be on the cards. He’s displayed fantasy chops in the past, so if you can hack his bye-absence, Powell might be worth a punt.

Will Day (80 AF/85 SC) – DEF

His bye isn’t until round 14 and if Scrimshaw misses more time, Day will have solid value. He’s got a fantasy game – he just needs the opportunity.

Liam Baker (DNP) – DEF

He was putting together some useful scores before his bye and I’ve seen him dropped in a couple of my leagues. Baker should be fine as an auxiliary piece during the byes, and may have some value extending past that if Short keeps playing in the middle.

Lachlan Ash (DNP) – DEF/MID

We are yet to fully see GWS’s new composition under McVeigh, but before the bye Ash scored a couple of mid-70s and should be an adequate stopgap throughout the byes. Whitfield’s return could possibly bear some impact on Ash’s scoring, just FYI.

Here are the mirage scores from Round 12 to avoid using a waiver priority on:

Sam Reid (114 AF/136 SC) – FWD

Every now and then Reid does this, but he’s never been reliable as a key position forward. He also has the bye upcoming.

Tom Barass (85 AF/126 SC) – DEF

Anyone who can score a 10 (AF) from a full game will probably never be a worthy waiver add.

Minairo Frederick (106 AF/ 98 SC) – FWD

It took 3 goals for Frederick to get here, and I just can’t see him being a consistent scorer. He has 2 good weeks though, and plays the Hawks next week, but he just isn’t for me.

Here’s hoping you can capitalise on the busy, bye period waiver activity. Let us know who you nab in the comments or on Twitter: @lionelhutz4prez
